Buttermilk Ranch Dressing

I'm not sure who was the originator of this buttermilk dressing recipe, maybe Aunt Loma Gereau-Carlson or Aunt Lola Schafer. What I do remember is this was my dad, Pug Steinhoff's favorite salad dressing recipe and was always a staple in our refrigerator while growing up. He would put in on everything including potatoes and fish. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the he was a bit particular about making it only with Jilbert's Dairy Buttermilk. This is the perfect dressing to pour over some sliced cucumbers and onions.

Homemade buttermilk ranch dressing recipe


1 qt. buttermilk

1 qt. mayonnaise

3 tsp. accent

3 tsp. onion powder

3 tsp. onion flakes

3 tsp. garlic salt

3 tsp. pepper

3 tsp. parsley flakes (I prefer to use 3 tbsp. fresh parsley if available)

optional: I've also added fresh chives when in season


1Whisk all ingredients together until well blended.

2Serve with fresh veggies, a salad, or like Dad always did, with your favorite pan fried fish.

This dressing is relatively thin, so I often reduce buttermilk by 1/2 c. and increase mayo by 1/2 c. while other times I've added 1/2 to 1 c. sour cream.
*Recommend using real mayo as opposed to Miracle Whip which will change the flavor profile.
