Grandma Elsies Homemade Pie Crust Recipe

Elsie’s Pie Crust

Since my hubby, Todd, is a huge apple pie fan. I find myself making several throughout the fall season. And when I'm in the grocery store reaching for a "cheater pie crust," I hear Gram's voice ringing in my head, "LT! Don't buy that crap, it's so easy and cheaper to make pie crusts!" This crust freezes well.

Mix together

1 lb. lard

5 - 6 c. flour

1 tsp. baking powder

2 tsp. salt

Mix together

1 egg, well beaten

2 tsp. vinegar

1 c. cold water

2 tbsp. brown sugar

1Mix flour, baking powder and salt together, gently work lard into flour mixture with finger tips until you have pea size pieces.

2Blend egg, vinegar, water and brown sugar - add to flour mix until stiff dough forms.

3Divide into 4, shape into flat round patties, wrap in plastic or wax paper and refrigerate for 2 hours

4Roll out on a lightly floured surface or pastry cloth.

Dough will keep in refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or can be frozen. Note from Loma: I've had success substituting a mix of butter and Crisco for the lard, since I never have lard on hand.
