homemade pesto

Homemade Pesto

No store-bought jar of pesto can compare to this easy to make fresh homemade version of basil pesto. Classic recipes call for pine nuts and if you have them by all means go ahead and use them. I find walnuts to be more economical and I like the flavor a little bit more. When tossing with pasta, mix with some of the starchy pasta water to thin pesto.

German red cabbage recipe

German Red Cabbage

This braised cabbage dish is a wonderfully sweet and sour German tradition originating from my Dad's side (The Steinhoff's) of the family. Awesome dish! Easy to make and so tasty! Pairs nicely with pork or even venison.

Uncle Andy’s Macaroni & Cheese

Another classic from Grandma's recipe collection. She credits her brother-in-law, Andy Bertha, as her source for this recipe. This is a quick & easy recipe to make for a family dinner and pairs perfectly with meatloaf.

Onion Salad

Sidebar from LT: This recipe cracks me up. I love onions so this sounds interesting and I can't wait to try it (I'll up-date you when I do). I want to be clear, I am providing ingredients and directions exactly as it was written. Credit on recipe goes to my namesake, Aunt Loma.

Homemade buttermilk ranch dressing recipe

Buttermilk Ranch Dressing

I'm not sure who was the originator of this buttermilk dressing recipe, maybe Aunt Loma Gereau-Carlson or Aunt Lola Schafer. What I do remember is this was my dad, Pug Steinhoff's favorite salad dressing recipe and was always a staple in our refrigerator while growing up. He would put in on everything including potatoes and fish. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the he was a bit particular about making it only with Jilbert's Dairy Buttermilk. This is the perfect dressing to pour over some sliced cucumbers and onions.
